Last Saturday, we completed a filming job for Baby Girl Music. We were excited to have Etta Smith singing in the back of one of our taxis as they filmed the new video for her recent single “Sold”.

This week, we completed a filming job for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (home of the famous BAFTA awards) when they hired one of our London Black Taxis as the venue for an interview with Kenneth Branagh.

BAFTA is the leading independent charity supporting, developing and promoting the art forms of the moving image in the UK – from Film and Television to Video Games and Interactive Media.  The Academy’s Mission is to support, develop, and promote the art forms of the moving image, by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners, and benefiting the public.

Kenneth Branagh is a man of many talents, among them acting, directing, and producing. To quote the founder of the Branagh Compendium, ”the guy acts, he sings, he dances, he directs, he writes, he channels Bill Shakespeare on a regular basis, he’s an awfully nice chap, and he’s kinda cute. In the minor deity hierarchy, Kenneth Charles Branagh is one level below Joe Montana (the greatest quarterback of the greatest [American] football team ever) and just above the guy who invented Pepsi”.  Being a Joe Montana fan, I’ll have to go with him on that one, but not sure about the Pepsi part.

We don’t know why BAFTA was interviewing Kenneth, but we can only hope!

As I write this post today, 23 November 2011, Kenneth’s latest film My Week with Marilyn is opening in theatres in America.  On Friday 25 November, it opens in the UK. Watch the trailer at IMDb.

Recently, Met Film hired one of our taxis as the venue for a film interview with rappers Silibil N Brains.  Met Films is filming a BBC feature documentary about Silibil N Brains – the Scottish rappers who faked American accents to secure a deal with Sony Records.

If you were down with your American hip hop back in the early part of this decade, you may remember this Californian rap duo who came bursting onto the scene as the next big rap import from the West Coast.  The only problem was that these two hip hop upstarts weren’t from the West Coast at all. They were actually straight out of Scotland!

Our driver, Russ, said that “the filming in the back of the taxi was completed in only one take.  Billy and Gav never stopped talking, and the interviewer could hardly get a word in!”

Recently, one of our taxis was used in a film interview with David Suchet, filmed by Testimony Films.  Testimony Films is run by noted social historian Dr. Steve Humphries who has made several critically acclaimed and award winning documentaries over the last 15 years, including Veterans: Last Survivors of the Great War (BBC1), Ground Zero (Channel 4). The 50s and 60s in Living Colour (ITV1),  and Britain’s Love Story (ITV1).

On their website, you can watch film clips of some of their award-winning work, including “9/11 Hotel,” “The Miracle of Carriage 346,” and “Children of the Doomed Voyage.”

It hasn’t been revealed yet how Testimony Films will be using this interview with David Suchet.  However, knowing the quality of work that Testimony Films produces, we should be in for some thought-provoking viewing.

Have you heard of The Black Cab Sessions?

We have been chosen to be a Black Cab Sessions cab!

The Black Cab Sessions are a series of one-song performances by musicians and poets recorded in the back of a Black Cab and filmed for an Internet audience. The sessions are recorded while the black cab that serves as the studio travels through city streets, usually in London, England but sometimes in other places such as New York City.

On their website www.blackcabsessions.com, they tell us that

The sessions are all about great music and the venue strips this to its essence. We aren’t picky about genre and will happily open the cab door to anyone who blows us away.

Their motto is

One Song. One Take. One Cab.

The Black Cab Sessions video clips begin with a screen showing the name of the artist and date that the session was recorded. Next follows a shot of the cab driver introducing the artist or band. The artists then give their performance.

Most of the performances feature rock bands, ranging from popular acts such as Death Cab for Cutie, The Kooks and My Morning Jacket to lesser known acts such as the Cave Singers. Other performances stray from the rock music scene:  folk music, poetry, and even beat-boxing (a form of vocal percussion which produces drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds).

These intimate performances embody the lo-fi ethos of the indie rock scene and have have gained a cult following of viewers both on their own website and on YouTube.

During the performances, the artists can often be seen reacting to the unusual venue. For example, during the New Pornographers session, the two musicians can be seen bouncing up and down in their seats as the cab hits speed bumps. The performances are also shaped by the space afforded by the back of a London black cab.

The Black Cab Sessions were conceived by Jono Stevens and produced as a partnership between Hidden Fruit (Gen Stevens and Chris Pattinson) and Just So Films (Jonny Madderson and Will Evans).  Filming of The Black Cab Sessions began in May, 2007 and is ongoing.

One of the producers reports that about 10 percent of the cab drivers approached by the producers turns them down, thinking that the idea is weird, but that those who do participate enjoy it.

One of those drivers who immensely enjoyed having his cab used as a music studio was our driver Jon.  On May 14 2009, we were delighted and excited when one of our black cabs was chosen to host William Orbit:  famous in his own right as a musician and composer and also producer of the likes of Madonna and Blur.  Stay tuned to this blog for a story about that momentous day!
